Refurbishment of Lant Playground

Good news - an improvement grant of £20,000 has been awarded through the Cleaner, Greener, Safer Fund to refurbish the playground on Bittern Street. Work has already started on the first phase and funding is now needed to complete it. The Playground will be re-open on July 9th 2009.

Cricket club (proposal)

Passion for Cricket

Since 2001 Southwark Council have been encouraging young people across the borough to get involved with school cricket projects. Southwark cricket partnership is well known through out the borough and is one of the council priority sports.

Our aim is to maximise this opportunity for our younger residents to participate in this exciting, educational and physical sport. There are a number of facilities and cricket clubs spread across our local boundaries which includes coaching venues suitable for young people ranging from 9 years to 16 years old. This is an opportunity for the community to embrace and benefit those participants on the estate.

The area covered by Lant and Bittern Streets TRA comprises of 176 dwellings, out of which there are approximately 78 youngsters, the majority of whom are aged between 9-16 years. 80% of the above mentioned housing is social housing occupied by Council tenants and of low income. We are hopeful that funding for such a project will be considered by most funding agencies. There are various funding opportunities:

1.     Community Club Development Fund

2.      London Active Partnership (LAP)

3.    Southwark School Sport Coordinator Programme (SSCO)

4.    Awards for All – a sports Lottery revenue fund

5.    Big Lottery funding

We are also hoping to make representation to some of the known, well-established cricket clubs in the borough for support, or alternatively a partnership that would suit our youngsters. We have in mind the Burgess Park Cricket Club which holds an under 21s club on a Sunday.

We will initiate a working group to do a feasibility study.

If you are a tenant and especially if you are a young person and want to get involved or give us your views please do get in touch.
